Mailer Boxes
What Are Mailer Boxes?
Mailer boxes (also called literature mailers, tuck-front boxes, or roll-end tuck-front boxes) are one-piece corrugated boxes designed to ship products directly to customers without needing an outer shipping container. They've become the signature packaging style for e-commerce brands, subscription boxes, and direct-to-consumer companies because they combine protection, presentation, and brand storytelling in a single package.
Why Mailer Boxes Dominate E-Commerce
Mailer boxes have exploded in popularity because they solve a specific problem: how to deliver a branded unboxing experience without using two layers of packaging (an inner branded box plus an outer plain shipping box). With a mailer box, the branded packaging IS the shipping container — saving material, reducing costs, and creating a better first impression when the customer opens their delivery.
Common Mailer Box Styles
Roll-End Tuck-Front (RETF)
The most popular mailer style. A flat bottom with a tuck-front lid that opens like a book. This is the "standard" mailer box you see from most e-commerce and subscription brands. Clean presentation, easy to open, stackable.
Roll-End Front Tuck with Auto-Lock Bottom
Same tuck-front lid as RETF but with an auto-lock (crash-lock) bottom that pops into shape without taping. Faster to assemble in fulfillment operations. Slightly higher cost per unit.
Tab-Lock Mailers
Closure uses interlocking tabs instead of tuck flaps. Provides a more secure closure without tape and a tamper-evident opening experience.
Two-Piece Mailers (Rigid)
Separate lid and base, typically made from rigid board rather than corrugated. Used for premium/luxury products where the unboxing experience justifies the higher cost.
For mailer boxes, interior printing has the highest impact on unboxing experience — the inside of the lid is the first thing customers see when they open the box. Many brands invest in a printed interior lid with a message, social media handles, or graphic while keeping the exterior simple.
Customization Options
Custom Dimensions — Mailer boxes can be made to virtually any size. The key constraint is that the height should be relatively shallow (typically 1-4 inches) to maintain the flat, book-style opening.
Printing — From 1-color flexo to full-color digital and lithographic printing. E-flute corrugated provides the best print surface for detailed graphics.
Finishes — Matte or gloss coating, soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, and embossing/debossing are all available from full-service custom packaging suppliers.
Inserts — Custom corrugated, foam, or molded pulp inserts to hold products securely. Tissue paper, stickers, and printed cards are common additions.

Mailer box pricing depends on size, material (E-flute is standard for smaller mailers, B-flute for larger), printing (each color adds cost), finish (coatings and lamination add $0.05-$0.50/unit), and order quantity. As a rough guideline, a basic custom-printed mailer box in quantities of 1,000+ typically runs $1.00-$3.00 per unit. Premium finishes and smaller quantities can push costs to $5.00+ per unit.
